With more vehicles on the road for holiday travel, the Mississippi Department of Transportation wants to help keep the holidays merry and bright. MDOT plans to do this by limiting travel delays caused by construction and by offering some travel advice during the holidays.

All four-lane and interstate highway construction will be suspended during the Christmas and New Year rush travel hours. All road construction requiring lane closures will stop on December 24 and resume on January 2. The closures will provide maximum travel capacity and minimal construction delays for vacationing travelers.

“Although no road construction work will be taking place across the state, motorists should be aware that some lane closures will remain,” said MDOT Executive Director Brad White. “These lane closures are there to protect motorists, and MDOT urges drivers to always treat these areas as active work zones, even if workers are not present.”

No matter the destination, safety should be motorists’ top priority. MDOT offers the following safe driving tips:

Plan ahead. The MDOT Traffic mobile app displays real-time road conditions along your travel route. Get plenty of rest before driving. Remember to plan frequent stops if you are traveling long distances. Seat belt. Wearing a seat belt is one of the easiest and most effective ways to save lives and reduce injuries from a potential crash. Always be careful in work areas. Maintenance workers also want to get home safely to their families during the holidays. Watch out for wildlife. Cooler temperatures mean deer and other wildlife are more active near roads. Be very careful if you are traveling during dusk and dawn. Do not drive while intoxicated. If you plan to drink, make sure you have a designated driver.
